Friday Photo Share November, 18 2011

Happy Friday!

It’s been a busy week for me with work and other personal commitments. As a result I STILL haven’t gotten through all the images from our trip out West. I better get it done this weekend though because my parents are visiting for Thanksgiving and they expect a fantastic showing of all the great photographs I took! I’m hoping to get through them this weekend and then put together a couple of posts showing the images from our trip. Stay tuned for that (probably the week after Thanksgiving).

For this week’s photo share I have another car photo that I took this past Summer. This one is of an old Dodge truck (I think it was a 1948) that was in the middle of restoration. Once again, the headlight caught my eye. The little bit of orange in the light was in stark contrast to the white/gray/metallic colors of the rest of the vehicle. I used a fairly large aperture (small f/stop #) to get a shallow depth of field.

 Upcoming Contest Announcement

This blog is slowly starting to gain traction. It’s been up for a couple of months and is starting to get more and more page views and subscribers. For that I am very thankful :-) I’d like to kick things up a notch though so I will be running a contest/giveaway with HUGE, Super-Duper, MASSIVE prizes !!! (or at least a moderately decent prize) very soon. I’m thinking of something that will be based on increasing the subscriber base and/or page views. It will most likely involve the submission of photographs along a certain theme.

As of now I’m thinking of starting the contest the week after Thanksgiving, so stay tuned for an announcement.

If any of you have any ideas for the contest I’m open to suggestion. Just leave a comment with your idea and I promise it will be seriously considered.

Friday Photo Share for November 4, 2011

After a busy week I’m finally starting to go through all the shots I took on our trip. I’m starting with the 1st day of the trip and working my way through the days. So, I’ve really just begun to work them but for this week’s photo share I wanted to highlight an image that isn’t really a great photo but is one I like.

The photo was taken on our way to Death Valley from Las Vegas on Monday. We were driving up US 95, headed to Beatty, NV when traffic stopped completely about 20-30 miles North of Vegas. There was an accident that was being moved off to the side of the road, so we were sitting there for about 20 minutes.

After a while, I got out of the car because I noticed that there were some neat clouds forming over the hills to the East. I grabbed the camera and put the 10-22mm lens on it. This was the first time I was able to use the lens on the trip. I wandered off the road about 50 yards and came upon this desert plant (Mojave Yucca?) and snapped off a few images before Pam yelled at me to get back to the car because traffic was starting to move.

Here it is:

Desert Yucca and Sky Somewhere North of Las Vegas

The photo isn’t anything great or dramatic but the clouds in the sky were neat. I just needed to find something to give some perspective to the picture, and this dessert plant worked out OK. If any of you actually know what the plant in the picture is, please let me know in the comments.

I wish I was here closer to sunset rather than Noon because the light would have been much better. But it wasn’t so I had to make the best with what I had. As it turns out, this was one of the only times we would see clouds for the next week, so I’m glad I got some pictures of them.

I guess that’s another lesson to be learned: that while we (as photographers) always want “perfect” conditions, we need to grab the shots that we can, when we can, because the ideal conditions may not appear. I think this is especially true when you are at a place that you might not get to again for a while, if ever. Take the best photographs you can, when you can and enjoy the experience.

Friday Photo Share for October 28, 2011

For this week’s Friday Photo Share I’d like to share an image of a small animal that we encountered while on our trip out West. This little guy was waiting for us in the bathroom when both of us got up in the dark to use the facilities while at the hotel in Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley:

Our Pet Scorpion

Yup, it was a Scorpion. He was sitting (do scorpions sit?) right on the threshold between the room and the bathroom. I was the first to get up and I walked into the bathroom barefooted, used the toilet, and stumbled back to bed, all in the dark and without noticing it. Pam got up after me and she was smart enough to turn on the light, at which point she said “hey, look at what’s sitting on the floor!”

When I saw it I realized that I was very lucky because it was sitting very close to where I walked. If I would have stepped on it I’m sure I would have gotten stung by it. As far as I know I’m not allergic to Scorpions but I’ve never been stung by one. I guess the Scorpions that inhabit Death Valley are not deadly, so that was comforting :-) .After I took this picture with our Canon PowerShot S95 I grabbed the ice bucket and scooped him into it. It was only about 1-1.5 inches long and he (I don’t know if it was male or female) was kind of sluggish. It was very easy to get him in the bucket. I took the bucket outside and dumped him in the desert about 50 feet from the door.

That was my first mistaken encounter with a Scorpion and I don’t want another. They are kind of cool animals though and Pam was quick to remind me that her high school  mascot was the Scorpions (she grew up in New Mexico).

I’m hard at work going through all the images I took while out there and I hope to recount our trip over a few posts in the coming week or so. I promise that there are no more Scorpion pictures. Stay tuned…

Friday Photo Share For October 14, 2011

Wow, it’s already mid October. Time sure flies! I’ve been very busy this week with everything except photography. I still wanted to share an interesting photo with you. I guess the theme of this week’s photo share is “keeping your eyes open” Here is an image I took during the Atlanta photowalk a couple of weeks ago:

Friday Photo Share For October 14

Interesting Window Shadows

We were walking down a street on our way to the Barnes & Noble building when we passed this older building on our right side. Out of the 20 or so people in our group I think I was the only person who saw this. The thing that caught my attention was the alignment of the railing shadow through the frame of the window. If you look closely there’s almost a perfect crossing of the shadow with the window frame, all the way through the window. I don’t know what the odds are of this happening again but I figured I’d better get the image while I could :-)

I guess the moral of the story is that you always need to be looking around when you’re out with your camera because you could just come across something at least a little unique.
