Project 365 Update-Grass, Bacon, Birthdays and Bowling

This update to my project 365 includes days 116 through 121 and features some grass, bacon, a special birthday and bowling. Enjoy!

Day 116-The Grass Is Always Greener

Once again my legendary green thumb (in my own mind) has been put to the test, and once again it has failed miserably.

I put some topsoil and grass seed on top of a drainage ditch that I dug last year with the intention of actually having grass germinate and grow. But, as you can see in this photo, nothing is growing. All there is after nearly 3 weeks of faithfully watering is a green mulch path in my lawn. None of the grass has germinated yet.

I’ll keep watering but my hopes aren’t very high at this point.

Day 118-Return To Sender

I purchase a lot of stuff online and Amazon is one of my favorites. A couple weeks ago I ordered a circular polarizer for my new Canon 15-85mm lens. I thought I ordered the right size but when it arrived it was too big. Fortunately, their return policy is straightforward and easy to use. So, back in the box it went to be returned to Amazon. I’ll re-order the correct size later today.

Day 119-Happy Birthday Mr TDI

Today is the 1st “birthday” for our Jetta TDI Wagen. It’s 1 year (and 8134 miles) to the day since we picked up the car from the dealer. I decided to celebrate by giving it what it needs the most, a belly full of new motor oil. I use Mobil 1 5w-30 ESP Full Synthetic oil and an OEM VW/Audi oil filter. All set for another year of driving!

Day 120-Bacon Wrapped Teenie Weenies

This was the final week of our bowling league. We always have a pot luck and for the 2nd year in a row we’re going to bring our “world famous” bacon-wrapped teenie weenies. As you can see from the picture we lovingly wrap each little teenie weenie in it’s own bacon blanket. To prepare them all we need to do is lay them out on a baking sheet, cover them with brown sugar and then bake for 30 minutes or so at 375. The result is some delicious bacon-wrapped goodness!

Don’t you wish you were in our bowling league? :-)

Day 121-Bowling For Dollars

Tonight was the last night of or Fall/Spring bowling league. As you can see from the photo, our team, “Pins Beware”, is in 2nd place. We managed to stay there tonight meaning we finished with our highest overall placing ever!

My goal was to get to a 150 average by the end of this league and I fell just short with a 148. That’s up from the 143 I started with back in August of last year though, so I can’t complain.

We get a 3 week “off season” before the Summer league starts up.

Project 365 Days 108 to 110

Doing a little catching up here with the last few days worth of project 365 photos. This batch includes a cat, a lawnmower and a camera lens:

Day 108-Oscar The Cat

Here is a quick photo of the other of our two cats, Oscar. I can’t believe I made it to day 108 before posting a photo of him. Oscar is a youthful 13 years old. He is very active and still loves to jump up on us and step on various body parts that make us recoil in pain (use your imaginations) :-)

Day 109-The Craftsman 5.0

Here is one of the “workhorse” objects in our house. Yes, the humble lawnmower. We’ve had this Craftsman 5 horsepower lawnmower since 1997 and it has performed admirably. In over 15 years I haven’t had a single problem with the engine. I change the oil once every few years and as you can see from the photo, I don’t wash it very much.

It’s coming into prime mowing season so I’m hoping it’s up to the task again this year just as in the past.

Day 110-Rent-a-Lens

I’m going to be doing some wide-angle shooting this weekend but I don’t own a wide-angle lens. The answer?-rent one!

I picked up the Canon EFS 10-22mm today from aperturent.com They are a local company here in the Atlanta area. I rented this same lens from them last Fall and was very happy with the service. I’ll probably end up buying this lens pretty soon but I wanted to give it one more “test run” before purchasing it.

Aperturent has a wide variety of camera equipment in stock and they do ship. If you’re looking to rent some equipment, check them out.

Day 107-In The Zone

Here’s how I felt last night:

Day 106-Get In The Zone

Tonight our team had a great 3 games in our Monday night bowling league. We were “in the Zone” both literally and figuratively. We were actually bowling inside the building with this colorful neon sign on it but we were also bowling very well. I figured a photo of the “Zone” part of Brunswick Zone was the perfect description of what I did tonight.

150 average here I come!

Days 103 Through 106 of Project 365

Here are the last few days of my 2012 Project 365. The subjects cover everything from spider webs to bowling balls with some skateboarding and Italian super-cars thrown in for good measure!

Day 103-Oh What A Wicked Web

A web from an unknown source hangs in a bush in our front yard.

Day 104-I Lost My License Now I Don’t Drive

Most of you classic rock fans will recognize that the title of this photograph comes from a song.

Here is the badge from a beautiful white Mazerati Gran Turismo MC that was parked next to us at the grocery store. I wanted to get the entire vehicle but it was blocked in on both sides so concentrated on the iconic symbol of the car.

This car could be your’s for a cool 139 grand!

Some specs to drool over:

Engine: 4.7L V8
Horsepower: 440
Top Speed: 187 (two more than a famous singer said his Mazerati goes)

Day 105-The Bailout

This afternoon we had an Atlanta #photowalk at the Old Fourth Ward Skatepark. +John Mason organized it and +Bob Baxley +Shane N. +Kent Foster showed up along with me. We had a good time and I got a lot of practice shooting moving objects. I got several good shots but this one is one of the better ones. It shows one of the guys “bailing out” as he exited the bowl to the right. I managed to get most things sharp and in focus, which I found is tough to do when your subject is moving.

I have a lot to learn yet but I had fun. I’m definitely looking forward to the next opportunity!

Day 106-Baked Bowling Ball

Here’s an easy to make recipe that’s guaranteed to improve your game:

-Preheat oven to 125-150 degrees Farenheit
-Take one well used bowling ball and place on center rack
-Carefully bake bowling ball for 20-30 minutes
-Remove from oven and wipe off accumulated oil sheen
-(repeat as necessary, up to 3 times)

I’ve tried this recipe in the past and it has improved the response and hitting power of my bowling ball, and that is a very good thing!
